Today, two dramas from STV Productions have been shortlisted in three categories in the Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards and British Academy TV Craft Awards 2020.
Both Elizabeth is Missing and The Victim were produced and filmed in Scotland for BBC One and were critically acclaimed by UK and international media.
Elizabeth is Missing is based on the best-selling novel by Emma Healey. The film marked Glenda Jackson’s return to the screen after 27 years. She played Maud, a woman whose search for her missing friend Elizabeth takes on a poignant urgency as dementia threatens to erase all the clues. The film was broadcast on BBC One in December 2019 to universal acclaim. Media, audiences and dementia organisations praised its sensitive and authentic portrayal of dementia, with the programme attracting a raft of five star reviews.
In The Victim, Kelly Macdonald played a grieving mother accused of identifying online the man she believes killed her son. This gripping and thought-provoking thriller also received glowing reviews and achieved a peak audience of 7.4m viewers.
David Mortimer, MD of STV Productions, said: “Last year we produced two high end dramas for the first time in seven years and are beyond thrilled that both have been short listed for the prestigious BAFTA Awards. Sarah Brown heads up our drama team and has worked tirelessly to develop and bring these two exceptional dramas to screen, and we have so much more to come. It’s essential that we maintain that momentum and we’re working hard with our colleagues across the industry to ensure the appropriate measures are safely in place and are followed to help kick start our creative industry, one that is essential to the economy of Scotland and the UK, even more so in these most challenging times. We’d like to congratulate all the nominees – now more than ever we should be celebrating the great talent in film and TV production in the UK.”
Sarah Brown, Creative Director of Drama at STV Productions added “It’s been a privilege to work with some of the industry’s finest talent to bring these two dramas to the screen. From the writers, directors, cast and crew, creating compelling drama is a huge team effort and these nominations are testament to their incredible work. I couldn’t be prouder that both these shows have been recognised by BAFTA.”
STV Productions has multiple drama projects in funded development at present, has a co-production partnership with esteemed drama producer Elaine Collins (Vera, Shetland) and has a stake in high end drama production company, Two Cities (Patrick Melrose).
