A new hard-hitting documentary series examining life behind prison bars starts on Sky 1 at 10pm on Wednesday, 28th October. Prison: First & Last 24 Hours unlocks the reality of crime and punishment in modern Britain and follows convicted criminals on the two most important days of any sentence: the first and the last 24 hours.

For this landmark series the film-maker, STV Productions, has gained unprecedented access to four Scottish prisons: HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow, HMP Low Moss, HMP Greenock and Scotland’s only women’s prison, HMP Cornton Vale.

The series will follow new inmates and give viewers an insight into the reality of being ‘banged up’ and the regrets and loneliness that will accompany prisoners over the weeks, months and years of their sentences.

While some inmates are nervously settling into their new home, others are excitedly preparing for their release but are also aware of the challenges they face in making a new life on the outside. The documentary gives a unique insight into the difficulties that prisoners face in breaking out of a cycle of incarceration.

Casting a watchful eye over both groups are the prison staff who reveal that their difficult jobs are made possible by a mixture of authority, humour and compassion.

This is prison as it has never been seen before. Honest and compelling – Prison: First and Last 24 Hours could change our perceptions of life on the inside forever.

Mick McAvoy, head of documentaries at STV Productions said: “The first and last days of a jail term are the definitive moments in a prisoner’s sentence with new inmates preparing to face life behind bars, while prisoners preparing for release are tasked with adapting to the world outside.

“This hard-hitting new series will examine crime and punishment by looking at the lives of our prisoners as they go through the most intimidating days of their jail sentence.”
