If you’ve picked up a tabloid newspaper in recent weeks you might have read about Joey Essex’s plans to become a single father or Louie Spence’s risqué new career.
The truth is, not is all it seems as Joey and Louie are just two of the stars who gave up control of their prized social media accounts in the name of comedy and a new show which hits our screens on ITV2 this Thursday.
Presented by Rick Edwards, Safeword will see two teams, made up of a celebrity guest and two comedians, compete in a competitive ‘roast’ format. In one of the rounds celebrities have their social media accounts hijacked with sometimes outrageous and always hilarious consequences.
Rick Edwards said: “I just enjoy watching how far celebrities are willing to push it in order to win what is ultimately a pretty silly game. Obviously they’ve always got the option of using their chosen safe word to make the humiliation stop, but most of them are so determined to beat their opponent that they let us go way beyond what most people would consider acceptable or decent. In a good way. And the reactions of their legions of social media followers are priceless, ranging from the incredulous, to the weirdly supportive, to the downright cross.”
Joining Rick throughout the 7 part series are regular team captains Katherine Ryan (Have I Got News For You, Mock the Week, 8 out of 10 Cats) and David Morgan (Sweat The Small Stuff and Virtually Famous). Each week the comedians guide the celebrities in a bid to out-roast their opponent and hold their hands in the face of scorn from Twitter trolls.
Other guests on the series include Katie Price, Louis Walsh, Tinchy Stryder and Hilary Devey.
Safeword is on ITV2 at 10pm, every Thursday night from 23 July until 3 September.
