STV Studios has a stake in innovative unscripted producer Primal Media with the two companies seek to co-develop formats to target UK and international networks.

Founded in 2016 by Adam Wood and Mat Steiner, Primal Media is behind a range of successful formats including RTS Award winning Release the Hounds for ITV2, Rose D’Or winning Bigheads for ITV and Carnage for Sky One.  Before Primal Media, Wood and Steiner developed and exec produced hugely successful formats including Cash Cab (over 5000 episodes worldwide), Gamesmaster (seven series for Channel 4) and international hit, Survivor.

Primal Media has just won its first commission as part of the STV family, an ambitious eight part series, Landmark for Sky Arts.

Factual entertainment producer, Barefaced TV, was added to STV Studios portfolio in September 2020.

Founded by Rosie Bray and Lucy Golding in 2017, Barefaced TV has already built a reputation for original and surprising content. Their most recent production is Channel 4’s Naked Beach, an ambitious format which performed well for the channel and has had international success, including a US option and a German remake.

Rosie and Lucy are the team behind BBC3’s Snog Marry Avoid, where the pair first met. Prior to forming Barefaced TV, they created BBC2’s Restaurant Wars and Channel 4’s The Millionaire Party Planner, and then went on to become joint heads of factual entertainment at NBCUniversal’s development unit.

Respected drama producer Elaine Collins has signed an exclusive deal with STV Studios  to develop and co-produce a slate of TV drama projects.

Working in close collaboration with STV Studios Head of Drama, Sarah Brown, Elaine will build a slate of distinctive, high quality, writer led shows, including a raft of projects set in Scotland.  In 2022, STV Studios extended its exclusive partnership with Tod Productions, for a further three years.

Elaine, whose own company is called Tod Productions, was previously a Producer and Executive Producer at ITV Studios. There, she optioned Ann Cleeves’ Vera Stanhope novels which she then developed and produced as Vera, starring Brenda Blethyn. The ITV1 hit show is currently filming its 11th series. She was also responsible for developing and executive producing three series of the hugely successful BBC1 crime drama Shetland starring Douglas Henshall. Most recently, Elaine was Creative Director at BBC Drama.

In January 2020, STV acquired a minority stake in high-end drama producer, Two Cities, the company behind critically acclaimed Patrick Melrose, commissioned by Sky Atlantic and CBS Showtime, and starring Benedict Cumberbatch.  This partnership will further enhance STV’s reputation as a leading producer of drama whilst providing Two Cities with creative and financial support as the business grows in scale in the UK and internationally.  Both companies are also strongly positioned to address the growing market for drama production from the Nations and Regions, with STV Studios based in Scotland and London, and Two Cities based in Northern Ireland and London.

Founded in 2016, Two Cities is led by Michael Jackson, formerly Controller of BBC One and BBC Two, CEO of Channel 4, President of Programming at USA Entertainment and Chairman of Universal Television, and Creative Director Stephen Wright, formerly Head of Drama for BBC Northern Ireland where was executive producer of Line of Duty and The Fall and commissioned Bodyguard.

Unscripted production company, Hello Mary – was the eighth label to join the STV family in September 2021.

Brighton-based Hello Mary was founded by Steve Regan in 2019. In just two years from inception, the company has won and delivered a range of titles for a variety of broadcasters across entertainment, documentary and popular factual. Hello Mary’s, new dating pilot, One Night Stand?, launched successfully last week on E4 and the business recently scored a new commission for Discovery, eight-part paranormal series Trapped Underground for Really.  Other productions include The Buildings That Fought Hitler (UKTV’s Yesterday), crime format Survivors (A&E), How Animals Talk To Each Other (Sky) and Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer Take Over (TCM).

STV Studios has acquired a minority stake in Glasgow and London-based, Mighty Productions. Through the deal, STV will have the opportunity to increase its position to a majority interest over time.

Mighty was created by Lynn Sutcliffe and Hugh Rycroft, who have been involved in developing and producing some of TV’s biggest hits including The Weakest Link, !mpossible and Tipping Point.  They have recently delivered a new quiz format for Channel 4 presented by Dara Ó Briain, called One and Six Zeros; are executive producers on an eight-part dating format for NBC Universal-owned streamer, Peacock, called Ex Rated; and have produced a raft of factual entertainment series for the BBC Scotland channel.
